    More than ever today, in the context of a war in Ukraine and a ceased supply of natural gas, Europe needs to enhance cooperation with the countries of the Caspian region. This said Energy Minister Alexander Nikolov, who participated in the Energy Week in Baku, Azerbaijan. As part of the thematic events is the 27th edition of the Energy Forum, involving the Energy Minister of Azerbaijan the Parviz Shahbazov, the Energy Minister of Romania, Virgil Daniel Popescu, the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova, Andrei Spinu, the Deputy Minister of Energy of Turkey, Alparslan Bayraktar, representatives of the European Commission and the US State Department, and others. The main topics of discussions during the Forum are related to energy transformation.

    Participants in the ministerial meeting were Zorana Mihajlović, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia, Konstantinos Skrekas, Minister of Environment and Energy of Greece, Virgil-Daniel Popescu, Minister of Energy of Romania, Parviz Shahbazov, Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan, German Galuschenko, Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Alparslan Bayraktar, Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, Kreshnik Bekteshi, Minister of Economy of the Republic of North Macedonia. They discussed the most pressing challenges in the industry, in the context of crises, as well as the future development of regional electricity markets, security of gas supply, decarbonization and European green policy. The participants agreed on the need for solidarity to diversify energy sources for Southeast Europe. To these ambitious goals, Southeast Europe can play a key role in providing reliability of the systems and transformation towards a low carbon economy. The experts expressed hope that governments in the region will undertake as a follow-up to the forum, working discussions with each other and with the European Commission, the Energy Community Secretariat and other partners to effectively implement the energy transition.

    Minister Nikolov: Bulgaria will not negotiate gas supply under pressure

    “The consumption of natural gas in Bulgaria is guaranteed at least a month ahead and no limitation of consumption is required at this time,” Energy Minister Alexander Nikolov told journalists regarding the announcement that Gazprom exports haа stopped supplies to the country. Minister Nikolov explained that a letter with such a warning was received by the Russian supplier on 26 April. Bulgargaz EAD has fulfilled all the requirements under the current contract, including making advance payments in accordance with the contract provisions. Thus the non-fulfilment of the contractual commitments is on the part of the supplier – Gazprom Export – with all the resulting consequences, the Energy Minister underlined.

Minister Nikolov: Bulgaria is the best destination for RES investment

The best for each electricity system on the way of transformation is to have current capacities in order to be able to balance the transition and make it as effective as possible. This said Energy Minister Alexander Nikolov to participants in the Re-Source Southeast Hub Regional Platform. He stressed that the so-called green and brown energy should not be opposed because they cannot exist without each other. On the integrated EU markets, the transition cannot be made unless Europe carries out an adequate and planned policy in the sector. In a region with deficits such as South East Europe, the only balancing country that consistently exports electricity is Bulgaria, and the system functions in such a way that neighbouring countries are largely dependent on Bulgaria.

Launch of the procedure for a strategic investor for "Belene" NPP project

In implementation of decisions of the National Assembly of 7 June 2018 and of the Council of Ministers of 29 June 2018, Natsionalna Elektricheska Kompania EAD announces a call for selection of a strategic investor for the construction of Belene nuclear power plant. The call also allows for expressions of interest to acquire a minority shareholding in the future project, as well as and/or to purchase electricity from the future power plant. An application in the procedure for selection of a strategic investor or, respectively, interest in acquiring a minority share in the project company may be submitted by Bulgarian or foreign legal entities, as well as consortium thereof. The deadline for receipt of applications shall be until the 90th day as of the date on which the call is published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
