A three-day Workshop on Promoting Sustainable Supply Chains for Critical Minerals was held in Sofia from 23 to 25 October 2023. It was organized by the Energy and Mineral Governance Program of the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Energy Resources in partnership with the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy.
Representatives of the governments of Bulgaria, Romania, the Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo participated in the seminar.
The Energy and Mineral Governance Program, which involves countries from around the world, is part of the U.S. Energy Resource Governance Initiative led by U.S. Department of State Bureau of Energy Resources to collect and disseminate leading practices across the mineral resources sector.
The event aimed to support regional collaboration on promoting sound mining sector governance, accelerating new mining development and expanding the value chain, especially in the context of countries' aspirations to achieve net zero emissions targets.
Participants in the seminar agreed on the message that mutually beneficial solutions for the sustainable development of critical mineral supply chains in the Balkan region could be developed with common efforts.
