The Ministry of Energy is working for TPP Varna life extension

Ministry of Energy is closely monitoring the technical and environmental status of TPP Varna, which is the second thermal power plant in the Balkans as regards its total installed capacity. As is known, the Treaty of Accession of Bulgaria to the EU laid down an annual decommissioning of one  unit at the thermal power plant within the period 31 December 2009 -  31 December 2014, if  is not made to comply with the environmental standards. Up to now, one unit has been annually decommissioned, and the last one should be decommissioned by the end of this year. Thus, on the eve of 2015,  the state energy system once again  will lose another 210 megawatts, TPP Varna will be shut down completely, which will result in  staff reductions.

The Ministry of Energy does not remain indifferent to the unfavorable development of the power plant destiny. Following the Government restructuring, the Minister of Energy Temenuzhka Petkova met the management of the owner CEZ EAD to discuss the options for reaching a mutually acceptable solution for the future of the power plant. A working group with representatives of the state and the investor was set up, to suggest a suitable resolution, so as not to lead to redundancy, job cuts and shutting down of the largest balancing capacity in the country.
