Minister Malinov at COP29: Bulgaria has a leading role in strengthening the national and regional energy security
Our country will join the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary on the Green corridor
“Bulgaria has a leading role in strengthening the national and regional energy security, the connectivity in the Black Sea basin and harnessing the renewable energy production potential of the Caspian region. The well-developed electricity transmission system, the interconnections with the neighbouring countries, the developed electricity market and the opportunity for investments in renewable energy sources determine a central role for our country in the implementation of this concept.” This was said by the Minister of Energy Vladimir Malinov, who was among the special guests at the Ministerial Dialogue on scaling up investments for tripling renewable energy sources and doubling energy efficiency, held in Baku within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The event was jointly organized by the Azerbaijani Presidency of COP29 and the United Arab Emirates, that held the Presidency of COP28. The discussion was also attended by the European Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra, the Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan Parviz Shahbazov, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency Fatih Birol, the Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency Francesco La Camera, the Director General for Energy of the European Commission Ditte Juul Jørgensen etc.
The widespread deployment of clean technologies in the industry, the access to competitive financing and government support are key to accelerating the green transformation and reducing emissions in energy-intensive sectors, Minister Malinov underlined and concluded that the Bulgarian government is directly committed to implementing these priorities.
Later that day, Minister Malinov also participated in the Ninth Ministerial Meeting on the Strategic Partnership Agreement for the development and transmission of green energy. He declared to his colleagues the Ministers Parviz Shahbazov (Azerbaijan), Levan Davitashvili (Georgia), Péter Szijjártó (Hungary) and Sebastian Burduja (Romania), the willingness of Bulgaria to join the intergovernmental strategic partnership agreement on the Green Corridor project between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary. The representatives of the countries welcomed the interest demonstrated by Bulgaria and expressed readiness to start the process.
“The security, cooperation, coordination, in combination with the suitable financing, are key to building green energy corridors between the countries” Minister Malinov highlighted.
He emphasized that Bulgaria has supported the Green energy corridor project since its very beginning as a strategic one for strengthening the regional and national energy security.
Bulgaria will participate in the joint project “Green energy corridor”, which foresees a submarine cable for the transmission of renewable energy between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and the Black sea and after that to Hungary and the rest of Europe.
