At COP29 Bulgaria announces its initiative on energy connectivity dialogues for an enhanced energy transition

"A regional partnership to exchange best practices in the construction of interconnections is one of the key factors for the development of the electricity system in line with today's challenges of integrating renewable energy." This is what Minister of Energy Vladimir Malinov said during the presentation of the Bulgarian initiative on energy connectivity dialogues to support the European Political Community Regional partnerships for enhanced energy transition. The event, hosted by Minister Malinov, took place at our country's pavilion in Baku in the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in the presence of President Rumen Radev, Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Ministers of Energy of Romania Sebastian Burduja, of Greece Theodoros Skylakakis, of Belgium Tinne Van der Straeten, of Moldova Victor Parlicov, Deputy Minister of Azerbaijan Orkhan Zeynalov, Minister of Innovation and Growth of Bulgaria Assoc. Prof. Rossen Karadimov, Deputy Minister of Energy Iva Petrova and other officials.

The Non-Paper on Energy Connectivity Dialogues to support European Political Community Regional Partnerships for enhanced Energy Transition calls for deepening interregional cooperation to deliver more sustainable, reliable and clean energy systems. The initiative is in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement and to support connectivity for electricity transmission in the South-North corridor, which will enable the integration of renewable energy into energy systems. Belgium, Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Moldova, Romania, UK, Hungary are the first countries to support the initiative. We expect other countries to join.

"Our vision is to hold a series of technical and politically structured dialogues to exchange views on topics of common interest in the coming months," Minister Malinov explained. In February 2025, at a themed event in Sofia, the scope of the dialogues will be defined and specific areas where it would be most useful to share knowledge, know-how and experience will be formulated. In the words of Minister Malinov, the united and coordinated efforts of the countries to develop their electricity systems are the best response to the challenges related to the energy transition.
