Minister Petkova has met with representatives from the largest Chinese nuclear power corporation

Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova has met with representatives from the Chinese General Nuclear Power Group (CGN). The meeting came as a result of a letter sent by the Chinese company in which they state interest in potential cooperation in the field of nuclear energy.

Minister Petkova familiarized the CGN representatives with the vision of the Bulgarian Government to build a new nuclear capacity in the country under the condition to have a strategic investor, but without any sovereign guarantee or any long-term power purchase agreement. CGN Group also raised the issue of the future of the "Belene" project following the award of the international arbitration in Geneva. According to Minister Petkova, Bulgaria is ready to launch discussions with potential investors who are interested in the realization of this project. The Ministry of Energy has submitted information on the "Belene" project, including the existing related infrastructure and the issued permits and licenses.

The largest Chinese nuclear power corporation is a state-owned entity. Its main activity is connected with the construction of nuclear power stations and the development of renewable sources. The Chinese corporation is currently building six Nuclear Research and Development Centers in China. At present, the company operates 16 nuclear power units in China and further 12 units are under construction. The total installed nuclear power capacity by the corporation for 2015 is over 17 GW.
